Our highly trained, School Nurses evaluate the health and developmental status of students. Our providers coordinate medical care and support in a school setting. In California, school nurses are bachelor’s prepared registered nurses who hold a school nurse services credential.
ASSESSMENTS / SCREENINGS
Nurses perform school-wide vision and hearing screenings pursuant with California Education Code. Nurses design and implement individual student health plans, incorporating plans directed by a physician. Nurses also perform health assessments for students with special education needs, or those being evaluated for eligibility. Our providers determine whether a student’s health impacts his/her ability to learn in school and if so, makes recommendations of accommodations or modifications that support student needs. Nurses interpret medical findings and make recommendations to the school in how to manage health conditions in a school setting.
Our therapists consult with, conduct in-service trainings for, and serve as a resource to teachers and administrators in the area of school based health management. Typical health trainings include Diabetes, Epilepsy, Medication Administration, Epi-pen Administration, Allergy Policies and Procedures, Immunizations and Student Health Plans.
School Nurses work collaboratively with parents and caregivers, school administrators, teachers and other providers, to ensure that students with any chronic or acute medical condition have their needs managed in a school setting allowing them to participate and engage in their educational environment alongside peers.
